A Man of Vision
vision is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination
or wisdom. it is a mental image of what
the future will or could be like.
a man of vision is one who knows why he is here, what he must do, how and
when he must do it and he is already doing it.
vision gives our lives a sense of direction while a lack of vision makes
life meaningless.
once you have a vision of what you must accomplish,
you become an effective person.
according to john Maxwell, vision distinguishes "effective
people" from "efficient people". while efficient
people do things right; effective people do the right things.
when you have a vision, it becomes the energy behind every effort and the
force that pushes you through all the problems.
Hellen Keller was asked, "what would be worse than being born
blind?" she replied, "to have sight without vision".
in acts 26:16-19 Paul told king Agrippa about his vision. there Jesus
told of what he must do in the future and he was obedient to it. this divine
encounter had a major impact on Paul’s life as he came to understand the reason
for his existence.
from that moment on, everything Paul did was to fulfill that vision.
later in his second letter to Paul could say; timothy 4:7-8 [7] I have
fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.
[8]and now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the lord, the
righteous judge, will give me on the day of his return. and the prize is not
just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearance.
Paul could say the above because
he was a man of vision. at the end of his life, he could evaluate his life
based on the vision he had.
there are 3 things that define a man of vision
1) his purpose; purpose gives direction. every man of vision knows the
reason for his existence and puts all his effort and energy into this. his
purpose becomes his compass as he sails through the raging storms of life.
knowing our purpose determines how we use our time. a man of vision
invests in his time. he understands that his time is counting down and makes
the best of what he has left.
2) his place; where and those you find him around. every vision is like a
good seed. it's potential to grow is determined by the soil it is planted. if
the soil is fertile it will grow and flourish,
if not it will perish. a man of vision must build the right environment and find the right
people(synergy) that will help his vision grow.
3) his
productivity; he prioritizes correctly. things are done in the order of their
importance not by sentiments or convenience. this enables him to produces the
right results. at this point his vision is no longer a mental picture but a
reality.
in his book,
developing the leader within you, john Maxwell gave 3 difference between a
person with a vision and a visionary person.
1. a person
with a vision talks little but does much
2. a
visionary person does little but talks much
3. a person
with a vision finds strength from inner convictions
4. a
visionary person finds strength from outward convictions
5. a person
with vision continues when problems arise.
6. a
visionary person quits when the road becomes difficult.
without a
vision life has no meaning. it is like
going on a journey without a destination.
